The Bohemian garnet is only found in Bohemia and was valued for it's beauty and supposed curative and uplifting effects. Garnet jewelry is varied in style and garnets themselves range from multi-faceted reflectors of rich deep reds to cabochons, juicy as pomegranate seeds. They also come in almost all colors except blue.
Garnets were mounted in low and higher karat yellow gold, gold plate and mixed metal settings and more recently in sterling. The history of garnet jewelry goes back hundreds of years and it is no wonder when you see how glorious they are. Bohemian garnet jewelry is known for it's encrusted close-set stones which are often rose cut and sometimes combined with larger cabochons and faceted stones. (Bohemia became Czechoslovakia after WWI.)

Garnet as a gemstone had its heyday in the Victorian era when other dark "anti-gems" such as pyrite and jet were also popular. Garnets were thought to be a malady for blood disorders or anger. Pyrope is the name of the deep red, orange-red or purplish garnet. The major source of garnet gems from the Renaissance through the Victorian Era were the "Bohemian " pyrope deposits in the vicinity of Trebenice, Czechoslovakia, thus the name Bohemian garnets.

Bohemian Garnets are real garnets (often imitated in glass) that were mined from a certain mountain region in Bohemia, now long exhausted of its garnets, never to be found again. They are characterized by their intensely rich deep red color. Garnet jewelry, prolific during the Victorian era, has long been a favorite of antique jewelry lovers. These older garnets may also be referred to as Bohemian garnets because of their origin.

Today's garnets range mostly in the lighter orange reds to watery reds and come mostly from India. Garnets are very plentiful today but the quality of Bohemian garnets has never been matched. Learn about antique jewelry and period jewelry.

Antique Victorian Rose-Cut Bohemian Garnet Bracelet.

From the late 1800-1900 Victorian ladies used to wear these.
It is small ,oval in shape.
Beautiful rose cut garnets all around. The safety chain is still on it.
It has a box clasp,I would say 2 1/4" x 2" closed .Inside circumference 7"
outside is 8"Hinged bangle bracelet w/ 50 garnets (hard to count them )
Close if maybe one off:) Deep red wine color and when it's in the light ,it turns a bright red

Antique Bohemian Garnet Ring Cabochon Stones Rare

Gorgeous antique garnet cabochon ring, c1800's. Beautiful, with two rows of small cabochon stones and one large stone in the center. Perfect condition. You won't find an example of this exquisite early jewelry anywhere. It test positive for gold but I believe it to be Tombak,
an alloy similar to pinchbeck with a deep rose gold wash, it is not marked. The size is approximately 7.pictures). The stones are exquisite and set very well. There are 25 Cabochons surrounding 1 large cabochon. The head on this beauty is 1 inch across, it makes a very grand statement.

FABULOUS Antique Victorian Bohemian Garnet Bracelet

Antique Garnet encrusted Bangle Bracelet that dates from the 1880s. There are approximately 200 deep red garnets in this piece. All different size stones are set in a raised central star pattern , and the band is completely covered in garnets.The stones are set in a silver colored metal. I do not know what type of metal this is. The bracelet has a clasp and a gold colored safety chain.

There is an inscription inside that reads "J.H. Linde ... 1888". ( shown in photo 11 )

The inside circumference of the bracelet is 6 1/2" , which will fit a small to medium wrist. The central star measures about 1 1/4" across.

I looked the bracelet over carefully with a magnifying glass, and I do not see any missing stones. I do see two stones on the back side near the hinge that are chipped. This flaw is hard to notice unless you really look carefully. Close-up photo # 8 has arrows pointing to these 2 stones.

The clasp is in good working order.

Victorian RoseCut Bohemian Garnet Star Cluster Necklace

This is an amazing antique necklace which dates to the mid Victorian Era. The necklace is a wonderful piece which is made of a base metal with a wash of low karat gold which is commonly called "Garnet Gold".

The necklace is finer than any we have had the pleasure of offering in the past. Very ornate and filled with hundreds of rose cut Bohemian garnets. Each link of the necklace has a cluster of garnets with dangling garnet links beneath each on the base of the neck.

The center of the necklace is comprised of a star shape which is highly unusual. The necklace measures 16 5/8" long with an early push in clasp. The star measures 1 1/16" wide by 2" long with dangle.

If you are a collector of Victorian garnet jewelry, this is a must have! The condition is VERY GOOD! There is one small garnet which is missing in the clasp. Otherwise the piece is perfect! ID=JWY188

From the oval ensemble hang three pear shaped cabochon drops.
